MHS girls win Conference 42 cross country title

The Mathews High School boys and girls cross country teams qualified for Tuesday’s Region 1A East championships following their performances at last Wednesday’s Conference 42 championship races at Beaverdam Park.

The MHS girls won the race with a near-perfect score of 17, while the MHS boys placed third, good enough to earn a spot in the regionals. The top three teams from each conference advance.

Five Conference 42 teams competed last Wednesday: Mathews, West Point, Cumberland, Middlesex and King and Queen.

The girls’ race went first, and the Blue Devils performed very well. Rileigh Betz (21:52) finished first for the team, and first overall, making her the Conference 42 MVP. She was followed directly by Skylar Lewis (21:55), Reilly Price (22:02) and Avery Betz (22:14), who were the next three overall finishers in the race.
