MHS girls’ tennis places third in region

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team closed out the season last Wednesday with an 8-1 victory over West Point. The win assured Mathews the number three seed in the region behind Rappahannock and Middlesex.

Individual winners in the West Point contest were Faith Lewis (8-4), Taylor Wood (8-6), Desiree Dixon (8-5), Chelsea Lowe (8-3) and Lily Jarosz (8-0). The doubles teams of Wood/Brooke Fulford, Lewis/Dixon and Liberti Carter and Lannah Callis also recorded wins.

On Monday, the Blue Devils hosted Northampton in the first round of the regionals and came away with a 5-0 win. Lewis led the way at the number one seed with a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory. Wood, Fulford, Dixon and Lowe all contributed wins to end the match.

Mathews will travel to Middlesex as weather permits for the regional semifinals.
