MHS girls split pair of road games

The Mathews High School varsity softball team split a pair of road games this past week against non-conference opponents, defeating Northumberland on Friday, 15-4, and falling to King William on Tuesday, 10-2.

Northumberland

Emily West pitched a complete game, striking out four in six innings to beat the Indians on Friday. Reese Brock and Joice Small were the top hitters for Mathews; Brock collected three singles and a double, while Small ended the day with two doubles and two singles. Smith and Christiana Wood both had a single and double in the win, while Morgan Crittenden, Aly Jackson and Ashton Hudgins contributed singles.

King William

Unfortunately, it was a different story on Tuesday for the Devils, who picked up only three hits in the 10-2 loss to the Cavaliers. Trailing 6-0 in the top of the sixth, Mathews did manage to put together a couple hits and an error to score the two runs.
