MHS girls shut out Pointers, Trojans in tennis

The Mathews High School girls’ varsity tennis team is on fire with three 9-0 shutout victories in recent action at West Point (April 17) and home against Essex (last Thursday) and the same Pointers (Monday).

Top seeded singles player Chloe Sanderson defeated West Point’s Zoie Browder twice (by scores of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1), and Essex player Mandy Byrd (8-1).

At #2, Sarah Brown rolled over Pointer Meghan Bantel (6-0, 6-0) on April 17; the two girls had a much closer match on Monday against her twin, Kelsey Bantel, with Brown losing the first set, 7-5, winning the second, 6-0, and trailing, 9-3, in the 10-point tie-breaker, Brown clawed back to win, 12-10. Brown made quick work of Essex player Taylor Mitchell, 8-0.

Third seed Lady Devil Anne Stewart defeated West Point’s Dianna Hardaway and Meghan Bantel by identical 6-0, 6-0 margins and Leah Carneal of Essex, 8-2.
