MHS girls shut out K&Q, fall to Cavs, Rams

After dropping a pair of games, the Mathews High School varsity softball team came back strong on Tuesday to overpower King and Queen, shutting out the Tigers, 17-0.

The win comes after falling by a 12-2 margin to King William last Thursday and a heartbreaking 6-5 loss Monday to Bay Rivers’ opponent Lafayette.

Mathews batters racked up the hits on Tuesday, led by Emily West, who connected on two doubles and a single. Joice Small and Christiana Wood each had a double and single, while Chelsea Armistead (double), Aly Jackson, Carolyn Taylor, Ashton Hudgins, Olivia Coons and Lainie Wilson added one hit apiece.

Lafayette

Mathews fell just short on Monday against the Rams. Mathews had two runners on base in the top of the seventh with no outs and popped up in the infield three consecutive batters.

Mathews lost to Lafayette in spite of a two-run homer by Armistead. Morgan Crittenden, Small and Coons also contributed hits.
