MHS girls score wins over Northumberland, York

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team earned a pair of victories during the past week, including a thrilling five-set match win over AA York High School on Monday night.

Last Thursday, the Lady Devils hosted Northumberland for the second time this season, and the Devils knew to expect a strong defense, but weak offense.

MHS dispatched the Indians in three quick sets, holding Northumberland to fewer than 15 points in each, 25-10, 25-14 and 25-14. The Devils demonstrated precise passing, impeccable setting and dominating offense. As a team, MHS earned 10 aces, 31 assists, 38 kills, six blocks, and 25 digs.

Mathews traveled to York on Monday to face the tough Bay Rivers District opponent and, in spite of inconsistent play, came out on top in a hard-fought match.
