The Mathews High School varsity softball team defeated Nandua, 10-8, on the road on Monday. Down 8-0, the MHS girls rallied to score four runs in the fourth inning and six more in the seventh to secure the win. The MHS girls had five hits in the top of the seventh, including a bases-clearing triple from Kylee Swanson.
Angel Shultz pitched all seven innings with five strikeouts. Shultz also contributed two singles. Also getting hits were Addison Lowe (two singles), Bentlea Lawrence (triple) and Emily Coons, Lindsay Coons and Mya Schroeder with one single apiece.
West Point
Mathews put up a good fight on Thursday, but fell to the visiting West Point Pointers, 12-7. In spite of the loss, a highlight for Mathews was the out-of-the-park homer hit by Lawrence, who also contributed a single. Marley Brock just missed out hitting for the cycle, ending the day with a single, double and triple. Addison Griffith collected two singles, while Lowe, Swanson, Shultz, Schroeder and Hannah Davis contributed one single each.
Northampton
The MHS girls defeated the visiting Northampton Yellow Jackets last Wednesday, 19-2. Brock posted a complete-game victory in the circle with six strikeouts.
Mathews batters collected 16 hits, led by Lowe, who went 3-for-3, including two doubles, and Shultz who hit a double and two singles. Swanson hit two doubles and Lindsay Coons ended the day with a double and single. Emily Coons contributed two singles and Lawrence (double), Griffith, Davis and Schroeder had one hit apiece.
The MHS girls were shut out by Middlesex on Tuesday, 17-0, with Shultz getting the Lady Devils’ only hit.
The MHS girls are scheduled to face King William today on the road. On Monday, Mathews will host Gloucester in a 6 p.m. game.
