MHS girls post wins over two AA teams in tennis

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team picked up two wins last week, beating AA foes Warhill and Grafton.

On Tuesday, March 15, the Lady Devils traveled to Warhill, beating the Lions, 7-2. In singles play, MHS #1 seed Morgan Sears lost a tough match to Brooke Byrd, 8-2. The Devils’ second-seed singles player Amy Collins fell to Molly Jesseman, 8-4. The rest of the matches went the Devils’ way.

Aly Collins, the third-seed player, was actually the first off the court, easily defeating Hannah Richard, 8-1. Rachel Byrd (#4 seed) and Jamie Ramsey (#5 seed) took charge of their matches, winning by identical 8-2 margins against Kate Blubaugh and Alex Grundi. Playing six seed, Mallory Hurst dominated Kelly Lebrija to win, 8-1.

Mathews extended its 4-2 lead in doubles play. At #1 seed, the Collins twins earned a measure of revenge, beating Jesseman and Brooke Byrd, 8-4. The second-seed pairing of Sears and Rachel Byrd continued the winning at #2 seed doubles, crush...
