MHS girls post OT win against Raiders, 50-48

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team improved its record to 9-4 with a thrilling overtime victory over the visiting Rappahannock Raiders, 50-48.

The Devils and Raiders were knotted at 43-43 heading into the OT period, with Mathews edging Rappahannock by two points.

Junior Reese Brock scored 18 points to lead Mathews in the victory. Junior Sarah Ashbaugh ended the night with 14 points, while senior Joice Small scored 12 points. Rounding out the scoring was junior Kayla Carr with six points.

JV Devils

The JV Devils got back out on the court Monday, falling to the visiting Raiders, 22-11. Scoring was provided by sophomore Lannah Callis, eighth grader Avery Thomas (four points each) and sophomore Laura Rowe (three points). With the loss, the team’s record fell to 5-5.

Tuesday night’s varsity/JV contest at West Point was canceled. Next on the schedule for the Mathews girls is a varsity-only contest on Friday against the visiting Middlesex Chargers.
