MHS girls place 2nd in state meet; boys place 4th

The Mathews High School girls’ cross country team finished its 2017 season as the state runner-up, while the MHS boys placed fourth in Saturday’s VHSL 1A state cross country championship, which was held at Great Meadow in Fauquier County.

The girls’ race was held first, beginning at 11:45. Twelve complete teams competed in each race, along with 20 runners who qualified individually.

Mathews girls performed extremely well, with less than a minute separating the first and fifth runners. Abbie Hudgins was the first Blue Devil to cross the finish line, with a time of 22:09, earning 23rd place. She was followed quickly by Brittany Ottarson (22:27) and Jaysen Hall (22:40). Next to finish for the team were Rileigh Betz (23:00) and sister Avery Betz (23:01). Rounding out the team score were Skylar Lewis (23:11) and Connie Johnson (23:29). The Lady Devils finished with an impressive score of 110 points.
