MHS girls pick up three wins

The Mathews High School varsity softball team earned three wins this week over non-district opponents, picking up victories over Bruton, Rappahannock and Lancaster.

Kayla Robins gave up only two hits in six innings on the mound last Wednesday as the Lady Devils crushed Bruton, 9-0. Freshman Kelly Adams closed in the seventh inning to keep the visitors scoreless. Leading Mathews on offense was Carole Bell with two hits and three RBIs and Sydney James with one hit and two RBIs. Kaitlin Eriksen, Madison Owens, Bailey Kujawski and Taylor South contributed one hit each.

Mathews topped host Rappahannock Raiders the next day, overtaking a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth, when Mathews plated four runs on seven hits to take a 4-2 lead. The game was called in the sixth inning for lightning with Robins earning the victory.

Mathews was led by Bell (one hit, two RBIs), James (one hit, one RBI), Eriksen (one hit, one RBI), and Taylor Denton, Amanda Miller and Owens with one hit each.
