MHS girls open volleyball season with Jamboree

The Mathews High School volleyball team kicked off its 2017 season on Saturday, with the varsity squad hosting the MHS Volleyball Jamboree, inviting four Peninsula District teams to compete in a day of scrimmages.

The schools represented were Gloucester, Warwick, Woodside, Menchville and Mathews high schools. Leading Mathews with kills for the day was Madisyn Jackson with 11, Anne Stewart with 10, and Belle Massimino with eight. Mia Gillenwater led the team with digs and Sarah Brown with assists. The Mathews varsity girls are working hard as a team to earn a spot in states this season.

On Tuesday, the junior varsity and varsity girls traveled to New Kent to have their first real scrimmages of the season. 

The JV girls fought hard against New Kent for their first encounter with live volleyball. Emily West, Lois Beale, Belle Frank and Katelynn Blake each had one kill for the game. Grace Bandurco had two assists for the game and Aleya McCurry added one. Leading the team with digs ...
