The 2011-2012 season started out strong for the Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team, which picked up wins against Northern Neck foes Essex and Rappahannock. On Tuesday, the girls suffered their first defeat, falling on the road to Lancaster, 57-45.
In last Wednesday’s season opener, Mathews hosted Essex and had little trouble with the visiting Trojans, winning 55-23. MHS controlled the entire tempo of the game, taking a 26-9 lead into the locker room at halftime. The MHS girls may have come back out a little too relaxed, but after the Trojans scored two quick baskets the Devils regrouped and took back the momentum.
Leading scorer for the night was Kaitlin Eriksen with 13 points. Mackenzie Moughon, Angela Sale and Megan Zeller each had six points, followed by Shelby Ware, Jessi Nelson, Sydney Morgan and Taylor Denton with five each and Samera Thomas and Whitney Eriksen with two apiece.
