MHS girls improve to 20-1

In a busy week for the Mathews High School varsity volleyball team, the Lady Devils posted four wins to improve the team’s record to 20-1 overall; 6-0 in the Tidewater District.

Mathews hosted King William last Thursday, sweeping the visiting Cavaliers by scores of 25-11, 25-11 and 25-10. Coach Pat Moughon was able to substitute freely, giving all her players some game experience.

The Cavaliers didn’t have much of an offensive attack, which resulted in a lack of digs for the Devils. Dig leaders for Mathews were Casey Parrish (six), Maddie McCann (four), Mackenzie Moughon and Teeny Robbins (two each), and Rachel Close (one).

Mathews, meanwhile, dominated the net, with Parrish scoring a team-leading eight kills, followed by McCann (six), Robbins (five), Moughon (four) and Close and Lindsay Crigler (one each). Parrish had four blocks, followed by Crigler with two and Mercedes Wells with one. Crigler had a team-leading 22 assists, while Shelby Ware added four.
