MHS girls go 1-2 in tournament

The Mathews High School varsity softball team had a long three-game weekend in a tournament at the Dream Fields sports complex in Lancaster. The Devils won the first game, 2-0, against Lancaster on Thursday night. Mathews bats went cold Saturday as the Devils lost to St. Margaret’s School, 14-0, and to King William, 18-2.   

Thursday night against Lancaster, Emily West pitched all seven innings, with three strikeouts and giving up no runs. The ladies had five hits, one each by Caroline Crittenden, Joice Small, Kelsey Ryan, Shayla Wheeler and West.

On Saturday, the Lady Devils had two rough games. In the first against St. Margaret’s, Ryan started on the mound for her first time, allowing eight hits and seven runs. West came into finish the game allowing six hits, and four runs with one strikeout.

Brittany Ottarson led the team with five putouts including a triple play at third. Small and Hannah Robins had three each, followed by Kandace Curko with one. Unfortuna...
