The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team opened its 2011 season with a tough loss on Monday against the AA York Falcons.
The score was 3-3 going into the doubles matches to determine the winning team, with York sweeping all three of those matches to take the win.
In number-one seed singles, MHS senior Morgan Sears was blanked, 8-0, by Wiktoria Plawska. At number two, Aly Collins lost to Jessica Lee, 8-1. Amy Collins, the third-seed for Mathews, lost by an 8-3 margin to Abby Chen.
With the top-seeded Devils falling to the Falcons, the lower-seeded girls stepped up. Rachel Byrd, at #4 seed, beat Xiaer Zhang, 8-4, by playing a very smart, consistent game, hitting some nice angle shots. At number five, Jamie Ramsey easily defeated Leah Reichle, 8-0. Sixth-seed Mallory Hurst also played well, defeating Yu Taun, 8-3, to earn the Devils’ third win.
