MHS girls fall to York Falcons in OT, 46-40

The Mathews High School girls’ varsity basketball team began its season with a grueling overtime loss to the York Falcons on Monday night, 46-40.

The game got off to a slow start for both teams. York sank the first basket but not until almost halfway through the first period. At the end of the first period, Mathews trailed, 3-6.

The momentum picked up during the second period with more shots falling for both sides but the Falcons stayed a few shots ahead and led, 19-13, at the half. The Lady Devils came out strong to start the second half. They outscored York, 11-5, in the third period to tie the game, 24-24. The fourth period was even as well with both teams putting up 15 points, sending the game into overtime.

Unfortunately for Mathews, the overtime period was much like the first, the majority of time was spent on York’s end of the court. Hallie Duncan and Ellie Armistead led the Devils in scoring with 11 points each. Head coach Tommy Eriksen said he has high expectati...
