MHS girls fall to West Point

The Mathews High School varsity and junior varsity girls’ basketball teams dropped a pair of close games to the visiting West Point Pointers last Thursday night.

The JV girls fell by a single point, 19-18, while the varsity Devils let a three-point lead slip away in the final quarter as the Pointers prevailed, 45-34.

From the opening tip, Mathews knew the game was not going to be an easy one. Both offenses and defenses were strong enough to keep the score close through most of the game. The Pointers were mainly playing a man defense and pressed in the fourth quarter to put some pressure upon the Devils. Mathews went into halftime up, 15-12, and maintained that lead through three quarters, 30-27.
