MHS girls fall to Pointers

The Mathews High School girls’ varsity basketball team fell to the visiting West Point Pointers, 34-19, last Thursday in the only game the Lady Devils had last week as games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday against Colonial Beach and Middlesex were canceled due to inclement weather.

Last Thursday, the Devils hosted the Pointers in a tripleheader alongside the boys’ JV and varsity teams. It was a back-and-forth battle in the first half of the girls’ game, with the Pointers taking a narrow, 12-11, lead going into the locker room.

In the third quarter, the Pointers took initiative and quickly, from the strength of their point guard Krishay Delaney, took a lead of 21-13 halfway through the third quarter. The Devils tried to come back but failed to execute their actions. The Pointers led going into the fourth quarter, 29-17. The fourth quarter was low scoring and disappointing offensively for both teams. With the Devils not being able to finish at the rim, the Pointers came out with the win. Hailey Love led the Lady Devils in points with seven, while Lyla Duff and Adriana Forrest each scored four points.

The MHS varsity girls are scheduled to host Carver College and Career Academy today, Thursday, Jan. 29, with a 6 p.m. tipoff. On Saturday, the MHS JV and varsity girls will host Gloucester. The girls’ games are scheduled for 10 a.m. and noon, followed by the boys’ games at 2 and 4 p.m.
