MHS girls fall to Lancaster, beat Indians, Panthers

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team suffered its first setback of the season on Friday, falling to the visiting Lancaster Red Devils, 50-35. Mathews came right back this week to post victories over Northumberland and Charles City.

In Friday’s contest, the visiting Red Devils came out ready and strong, while the Blue Devils had trouble getting to the basket, trailing 24-11 at the buzzer.

The Blue Devils never gave up, scoring 16 second-half points, but that wasn’t enough to overcome Lancaster’s early lead.

Joice Small led the team in scoring with 10 points. Stacie Thomas, Zayle Darby and Abbie Hudgins contributed four points apiece, and Hannah Robins scored two points.
