The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up three wins last week, and was narrowly defeated last Wednesday by Gloucester.
In the Gloucester game, Mathews lost to the visiting Lady Dukes, 25-20. In the low-scoring battle, Mathews held a small lead at halftime (16-14) and was still on top at the end of the third quarter (19-18) before Gloucester took charge in the waning minutes.
Taylor South led the team in scoring with seven points. Savanna Wooten ended with four points. Kirsten Beatley, Hunter Thomas and Kai McCann also contributed to the Lady Devils’ final score.
On Friday, the MHS girls defeated Northumberland on the road, 41-37. Top scorers for the night included Madison Owens, Mariah Robinson and Beatley.
