MHS girls fall to King William, beat West Point

In a busy week for Mathews High School volleyball, the varsity girls split a pair of Tidewater District games—falling to King William last Thursday, 3-1, and beating West Point on Tuesday by the same score. The team also competed in Saturday’s daylong Endless Summer Tournament in Virginia Beach.

King William

Mathews hosted King William last Thursday in the Lady Devils’ “Blue Out” night, with fans encouraged to wear blue. After dropping the first set, 25-22, Mathews tied it with a 25-17 win, then lost the last two sets, 25-19 and 25-17.

Grace Bandurco led the team with seven aces while Aleya McCurry had two. Bandurco also had the most assists with 12 followed by McCurry with eight, Kristen Frank with three, and Emily West with one. Offensively, Lois Beale had the most kills with seven. Jada Ashberry and Joice Small each had five, Jordan Hunley and McCurry each had three, and West contributed one kill.
