MHS girls fall to Caroline County in season opener

The Mathews High School girls’ basketball teams had their season opener Monday night, with a pair of rough losses against the Class 4 Caroline County Cavaliers.
The JV teams opened the night, with the Lady Devils falling to the Cavs, 40-9, but with signs of improvement and heads held high for the next game.
The varsity Lady Devils had a bumpy start, missing numerous free throws and making poor decisions, they ended the first half with only six points, trailing 33-6. They picked it up in the second half, scoring 13 points, but still not enough to beat Caroline, falling 54-19.
The Devils’ top scorers were Lyla Duff with seven points, and Carter Hayes and Elizabeth Moore with four points each. The Devils fought hard and are ready to get better to improve from their mistakes.
