The Mathews High School softball season began last week, with the varsity and JV teams taking on Northumberland and Lancaster. The varsity girls lost to the Indians and Red Devils, while the JV squad’s record currently stands at 3-0. Varsity Devils The MHS varsity girls opened the season last Thursday at Northumberland, falling to the Indians, 10-0. Freshman Hailey Love was the MHS pitcher, and she earned six strikeouts while giving up only three earned runs. Mckenzie Bartlett had the only Blue Devil hit, a single in the final inning. On Friday, MHS played Lancaster who was last year’s state quarterfinalist, falling to the Red Devils, 9-4. Love struck out four and gave up four earned runs. Addison Lowe and Bartlett both had singles during the game. On Monday, Mathews played Lancaster much tougher for four innings. With the score tied, 2-2, after five innings, Lancaster scored five in the last two innings and Mathews added one run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 7-3...
