The Mathews High School basketball teams are excited for the upcoming season and can’t wait to dominate the court.

The JV roster has a lot of newcomers who are ready and excited to play. The JV roster consists of Karla Henson, Keira Cannon, Fallon Cook, Allean “Beanie” Rowe, Ariel Forrest, Eloise Leslie, Kate Small, Korra Swanson and Jessica Taylor. Coaches J.J. Ashberry and Courtney Love are very excited to teach these girls and get them prepared for the varsity level.

This season, the varsity squad’s returning roster consists of seniors Lyla Duff and Emily Coons, junior Harmony Smith and sophomores Elizabeth Moore, Brianna Thomas, Bentlea Lawrence and Kylee Swanson. The Lady Devils also added freshmen Hailey Love, Adrianna Forrest and Carter Hayes to the varsity lineup.

The girls are ready for the season and can’t wait to see what this new team has to offer.

“I don’t want to offend any of the previous teams I’ve ever coached, but this group has had the best energy and desire to support each other from day one,” head coach Rob Marrero said. “With the addition of three very special freshmen, our three seasoned upperclassmen are excited and poised to take them under their wing. Now that our four sophomores have their rookie seasons behind them, this group will most certainly prove to be a core piece of our success. I’m extremely eager and excited to show our community what this group will accomplish. Our JV team, full of future varsity players, has a great season ahead of themselves, too. They have all proven to be very hardworking and eager to learn the game from Coach J.J. and Coach Courtney. Our future is bright.”

The Lady Devils had their first scrimmage this past Thursday against Westmoreland, they fought through their mistakes and strived to improve them. The girls had another preseason scrimmage at home on Tuesday against Phoebus, with the regular season starting at home on Monday against Caroline.
