The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team dominated the visiting Northumberland Indians on Tuesday, winning in straight sets, 25-15, 25-13 and 25-14.
The Devils played strongly throughout the match and got all team members involved. The Devils took advantage of the Indians’ numerous free balls with the team totaling 26 kills.
Mackenzie Moughon led the Devils with 12 kills followed by Maddie McCann with eight, Teeny Robbins with four, and Kacie Austin with two. Shelby Ware was credited with all 26 assists.
Although the Devils’ passing wasn’t at its peak, they managed to keep the ball in play when need be and wait for the right time to attack. On the defensive end, the Devils blocked well and dug the ball up often. Rachel Close led the team in digs with 14, followed by Austin with five, Moughon, McCann, Ware and Abernathy with three each, and Hannah Rowe with one.
