MHS girls defeat two NN teams

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up a pair of road victories over Northern Neck foes this week, easily defeating Northumberland last Thursday, 65-33, and beating Rappahannock on Tuesday, 47-36.

The COVID-shortened regular season is nearing an end—the Lady Devils host the Gloucester Lady Dukes tonight and finish up Friday as they host a rematch with the Rappahannock Raiders.

Northumberland

In last Thursday’s Northumberland game, three MHS players—Joice Small, Abbie Hudgins and Stacie Thomas—ended the night scoring in double digits. Small led the team with 18 points, also pulling down 13 rebounds. Hudgins was close behind, both in scoring and rebounds with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Thomas had 13 points and two rebounds.

Rounding out the scoring for Mathews were Kayla Carr (seven points), Reese Brock (six points) and Zayle Darby, Connie Johnson and Olivia Coons (two points each). Brock also had nine assists and eight rebounds.
