MHS girls crush W&L, 20-2

The Mathews High School varsity softball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a convincing 20-2 victory over Washington and Lee on Friday at Montross.
The Devils amassed 14 hits and drew 13 walks, giving the team a .519 batting average for the game. Leading batters for the game included Joice Small, who hit a home run and a single; Morgan Crittenden, who had two singles and a double; Reese Brock, who added a double and single; Chelsea Armistead, two singles; Ashton Hudgins, who had a double, and Alyson Jackson, Christiana Wood, Emily West and Emmillie Smith all contributing singles.
Three pitchers—West, Crittenden and Brock—combined for nine strikeouts and only gave up two hits. The MHS defense committed no errors on the day.
The MHS girls return to the diamond on Friday afternoon to face Southampton Academy in a 4:30 p.m. game at the Dream Fields in Kilmarnock in the first game of a tournament, which continues on Saturday. On Tuesday, Mathews hosts Northumberland, starting at 5 p.m...
