MHS girls crush K&Q to advance

 

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team finished its regular season with a down-to-the-buzzer win over Rappahannock on the road last Wednesday, 53-51. On Monday, the Lady Devils crushed King and Queen, 56-6, in the first round of post-season play.

Mathews hosted Central of Lunenburg last night in the semifinal round of the Conference 42 tournament. The winner of that game advances to Friday’s conference championship and also earns a berth in next week’s regional tournament.

In last Wednesday’s regular season finale, MHS came out strong and enjoyed a 27-19 halftime lead over the Raiders. Both teams scored 12 points in the third period, keeping the Mathews lead at eight points going into the final quarter.

The Raiders did outscore Mathews in that quarter and were breathing down the Devils’ necks in the final minutes, but Mathews held on for the victory. Ellie Armistead led the team with 23 points, followed by Hallie Duncan with 13, ...
