MHS girls compete in Christmas tournaments

The Mathews High School girls’ basketball teams played in a pair of Christmas tournaments over the past weekend, with both the varsity and junior varsity squads winning in their opening games, only to lose the rest.

The JV girls traveled to West Point to compete in the Pointer Invitational on Thursday and Friday, beating Washington and Lee in the opening round, 40-24, and then losing the next two games to Surry (45-17) and the host Pointers (18-12).

The varsity squad opened up the Lafayette Holiday Hoop Tournament on Thursday with a 51-30 win over Thomas Jefferson High School, advancing the team to Friday’s championship contest. The Lady Devils fell to the host Lafayette Rams, 38-15.\Mathews took on Thomas Jefferson from Richmond on Thursday and came out strong, outscoring the Vikings, 22-7, in the first half. Coming out of the half, Mathews stretched its lead to 20 but midway through the third quarter Ellie Armistead was injured and is out for the remainder of the season...
