MHS girls beat West Point, New Kent in tennis

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team picked up a pair of wins last week by identical 8-1 margins.

Last Wednesday, the MHS girls traveled to West Point. Aly Collins lost to Sarah Sheffield 1-6, 6-7 (6-8) in a tiebreaker.

At number two, Amy Collins used lots of topspin and played very consistently to defeat Jane Hagen, 7-5, 6-1. Mercedes Wells played strong to defeat Delaney Beattie, 7-5, 6-2, at number three. Number four Leanne Moughon played very smart to win against Suzanne Prince, 6-2, 6-2. Kate vanEmmerik playing number five used consistent play to win against Tia Lee, 6-1, 6-1. At number six, Carlyn Tillage played well to defeat Lindsey Williams, 6-2, 6-2.

In first-seed doubles, Amy and Aly Collins came out very strong to win against Sheffield and Hagen, 6-0, 6-2. At number two, Wells and Moughon won against Beattie and Lee, 8-2, and playing number three, vanEmmerik and Tillage won against Prince and Williams, 8-3.
