MHS girls beat Panthers, fall to Trojans

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up a win over Charles City and fell to Essex in recent action. The Lady Devils travel to Middlesex on Friday and host the Rappahannock Raiders and Tabb Tigers on Monday and Tuesday nights, respectively.

In the Tuesday, Jan. 15 contest against Charles City, Mathews controlled the game from the opening tipoff. The Panthers were limited to three points until the fourth quarter, as the Devils won, 45-11.

Stacie Thomas led in scoring with 13 points, followed by Abbie Hudgins with six points, Connie Johnson and Emily West each with five points, Hannah Robins and Joice Small each with four points, and lastly, Jade Davis, Malia Lewis, Skyller Worley and Chesapeake West with two points apiece.

The JV Devils also had no problems with their Charles City opponents, leading by 12 points at halftime on the way to a 32-12 victory.
