MHS girls beat Northumberland, Essex

Heading into winter break, the Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team’s record stands at 6-3 following wins last week over Northumberland and Essex, as well as a loss to West Point.

The JV girls’ record, meanwhile, stands at 4-4, going 2-1 in recent action.

Varsity Devils

The final week of 2021 action for the Devils began with a trip to Northumberland last Thursday to face the Indians. Sophomore Trinity Reynolds led MHS in scoring with 13 points as the Devils triumphed, 54-28. Junior Sarah Ashbaugh also ended the night in double digits, with 10 points. Rounding out the scoring were junior Kayla Carr (eight points), senior Joice Small (seven points), junior Zayle Darby (six points), freshman Nia Eyrich (four points) and junior Reese Brock, freshman Grayson Griffith and junior Emmillie Smith (two points apiece).

The following night, the girls were at home hosting West Point. Mathews fell to the visiting Pointers, 43-27. Small led Mathews with a total of nine poin...
