MHS girls beat Nandua, Charles City

The Mathews High School varsity softball team had a successful return to the field following Spring Break, posting home wins over Nandua and Charles City.

On Monday, the Lady Devils defeated the Nandua Warriors, 3-1. Hailey Love had 10 strikeouts as well as a single at the plate. Bentlea Lawrence had an RBI double and Addi Lowe, Marley Brock and McKenzie Bartlett each recorded singles.

On Tuesday, the MHS girls beat Charles City, 14-4, in a five-inning game. Love recorded 13 strikeouts in the lopsided victory. Lawrence had two doubles and a triple, while Carter Hayes hit a double. Lowe, Bartlett and Kylee Swanson each added singles.

JV Lady Devils

Monday was also a successful day for the JV Lady Devils, who faced Nandua on the road, with Mathews winning, 18-3.

Keira Cannon had 10 strikeouts to throw a no-hitter. So far this season, Cannon has amassed 57 strikeouts in six games.

All the JV girls played well, coach Tim Tillage said, with Emilia Patterson picking up several stolen bases; Kate Small had great at-bats scoring multiple RBIs. Natalie Davis had three singles batting in four RBIs.

The softball teams are scheduled to face King William in road games today, Thursday, April 16.
