MHS girls beat Essex, Gloucester in tennis

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team blanked the Essex Trojans on April 18, 9-0. The following day, the MHS girls traveled to Gloucester, beating the Group 5A Lady Dukes by a 6-3 margin.

Starting the Essex match off a little differently, Mathews chose to play doubles first. The top seeded team of Maddie Brown and Madelyn Johnson won their match, 8-1. At number two doubles, Chloe Sanderson and Sarah Brown held their Essex opponents scoreless, winning 8-0. Playing number three doubles, Ali Haynes and Caroline Evans also breezed through their match with a score of 8-0.

In singles play, the top three seeds—Maddie Brown, Johnson and Sanderson—all won by 8-0 margins. At number four, Sarah Brown used aggressive shots to defeat her foe, 8-2. Fifth seed Haynes flew through her singles match, winning 8-0. At number six, Avery Betz had many well-placed shots against her opponent to earn an 8-2 win. In exhibition play, Betz and Kate Casper won their doubles match, 8-2.
