MHS girls beat Drifters, fall to Red Devils in playoffs

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team defeated the visiting Colonial Beach Drifters in Friday’s opening round of the regional tournament, 44-41, only to fall on Tuesday night to Lancaster in the second round of post-season play, 42-20.

Friday night’s Region A opener was a nail biter, as the Devils and Drifters battled back and forth until the final buzzer. 

Going into the game, the MHS girls knew it was not going to be easy because they had never played the Drifters or seen them play before. In the opening quarter, the Devils came out sluggish not attacking the paint and allowed the Drifters’ point guard to drive and get fouled, making the score 9-9 at the end of the first.

The start of the second quarter was better, even though the Lady Devils went behind for a short amount of time, but made a 10-2 run to take a 23-17 lead at the half. Ellie Armistead led the way with 11 first-half points, with Stacie Thomas adding six. ...
