MHS girls beat Charles City, fall to Cavs

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up a pair of wins over Charles City and lost to King William in recent action.

On Jan. 16, the Lady Devils hosted the Charles City Panthers, winning easily, 66-25. The Mathews girls dominated from the start, scoring 42 first-half points and allowing some subs to contribute in the win.

Friday’s King William game was a different story. Mathews was up, 18-16, by the half. After the half, the Devils shut down. The offense did not create anything, so instead created turnovers. The Devils allowed the Cavs to score 24 points, 12 of which from the foul line. Mathews fell in the home game, 40-31.

Abbie Hudgins and Ellie Armistead led in scoring with 12 points each, followed by Jade Davis with four, and Connie Johnson with three.  In the junior varsity contest, Mathews fell to King William, 24-14.
