The Mathews High School volleyball team moved a step closer to earning a return trip to the VCU Siegel Center following Tuesday night’s Region A quarterfinal win over Washington and Lee, 3-0.

The Lady Devils, runners-up in last year’s Group 1A state tournament, will face Rappahannock at home tonight at 6 o’clock. The winner will be assured of a state tournament berth and will advance to next Tuesday's regional championship game.

Mathews won Tuesday night’s game over W&L, 25-14, 25-17 and 25-22.

Leading the team in aces were Tori Hicks and Victoria Bing with three apiece, followed by Sarah Brown and Belle Massimino with two each.

Brown led the team is assists with 22, while Anne Stewart added two. Stewart dominated the net with nine kills, followed by Massimino with eight and Madisyn Jackson with seven.
