MHS girls advance to regional finals

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team breezed past the semifinals of the Region A Division 1 tournament on Monday night, beating the visiting West Point Pointers in three straight sets.

Mathews dominated West Point by scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 25-13 to advance to tonight’s championship match against #2 seed Northumberland, starting at 7 o’clock.

If Mathews wins, the Lady Devils will host the runners-up from Region B; if they lose, they will travel to face the Region B champions. The winners earn a bid to Friday’s state semifinal game at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Stat leaders for Monday night’s win included Casey Parrish (14 kills, five digs), Maddie McCann (12 kills, one block), Mackenzie Moughon (four kills, three aces, four digs, two blocks), Teeny Robbins (three kills, three digs, one block), Lindsay Crigler (one kill, four aces, 23 assists, one block), Amber Burruss (one kill, one ace), Shelby Ware (10 assists), Hannah Rowe (one dig, one block), Kacie Austin (one kill, two digs), Mercedes Wells (one kill), Rachel Close (four digs) and Hailey Abernathy (two digs).
