MHS fourth in Wells Fargo Cup standings

Mathews High School finished in fourth place among Group 1A schools in the 2016-2017 Wells Fargo Cup athletics standings.

Mathews was first among schools from the eastern part of the state. Radford won this year’s Wells Fargo Cup with 377.5 total points, followed by Auburn (360 points) and Patrick Henry-Glade Spring (297.5 points). Mathews concluded the school year with 250 points.

First awarded in 1990, the Wells Fargo Cup goes to the school in each group classification that has achieved the best overall record in VHSL state-level competition in 27 sports—the state champions’ state champion.

MHS earned 122.5 spring points, with 50 of those coming from its state championship softball team. Mathews also earned 37.5 points for the girls’ tennis team that made it to the state semifinals and 35 points for the boys’ track team, which ended up fourth in the state.
