MHS finishes sixth in Wells Fargo Cup standings

Mathews High School finished ranked sixth among Group 1A schools for the Virginia High School League’s Wells Fargo Cup for 2014-2015.

First awarded in 1990, the Wells Fargo Cup goes to the school in each group classification that has achieved the best overall record in VHSL state-level competition in 27 sports—the state champions’ state champion.

Mathews ended the year with 187.5 total points. Mathews earned 125 points in the fall; 25 points for winter sports and 37.5 points in the spring. The fall points came from being the state runner-up in volleyball, as well as third-place finishes in boys’ and girls’ cross country.

The winter points were earned when the wrestling team took sixth place in the state tournament. The spring points came from the tennis team advancing to the state semifinals.

Radford won the Wells Fargo Cup with 447.5 total points, followed by Auburn (312.5 points) and Galax (267.5 points). ...
