MHS finishes eighth in Wachovia Cup standings

Mathews High School finished eighth among Group A schools in the Virginia High School League’s 2010-2011 standings for the Wachovia Cup. Points are awarded based on a school’s performance in state athletic championship events.

Radford was this year’s Group A winner, amassing 430 points, followed by George Mason, James River (Buchanan), Strasburg, Manassas Park, Galax, Gate City and Mathews.
Mathews earned 152.5 points—115 points during the fall season and 37.5 points for the spring. In the fall, MHS earned 45 points for the second-place finish of the girls’ volleyball team and a total of 70 points for the fourth-place finishes of the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams. The Blue Devils earned their spring points when the softball team advanced to the state semifinals.

For a second year in a row, Mathews also won the Tidewater District Traveling Trophy for the best winning record overall of its athletic teams.
