MHS falls to Lancaster in regionals

The Mathews High School varsity baseball season came to a disappointing end Monday afternoon, as the Blue Devils fell to the Lancaster Red Devils in the first round of the Region 1A East tournament.

The host Blue Devils had a 3-2 lead going into the top of the seventh inning, when Mathews gave up a walk and committed three errors, eventually giving Lancaster a 7-3 victory. Tyler Moore pitched the first six innings, with Christian Williams closing out the game. Payton Blake had two hits for Mathews.

On Friday, the Devils traveled to Middlesex High School to face West Point in the Conference 42 semifinals. Mathews won that game in five innings by a 11-1 margin. Williams pitched the first four innings to get the win, with Moore throwing the last inning. Moore was also 4-for-4 at the plate. Due to wet field conditions, the Conference 42 championship game was not held.
