The Mathews High School varsity baseball team picked up another win this week, crushing the visiting Middlesex Chargers during Tuesday night’s Senior Night game, 12-2.
The game started by honoring the four seniors on this year’s squad—Jalen Matthews, Ethan Armistead, Cody Tunstall and Brandon Williams.
Middlesex pulled out to a 2-0 lead on a couple of errors, walks and some timely hitting. In the fourth inning, Mathews finally got its bats going as Zach Dehoux led off the inning with a single up the middle. The Devils batted through the lineup as they plated five runs of their own to take the lead, 5-2.
Brent Smith came in relief for the Devils and shut the Chargers down in the four innings he pitched. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Mathews scored two more runs to extend its lead to 7-2. And in the bottom of the sixth, the Devils plated five more runs as they slaughtered Middlesex, 12-2.
Leading the charge for Mathews were the four seniors who scored seven of the 12 runs. Pitching for the Devils was Brandon Williams and Brent Smith; they only allowed two runs combined.
Today, Mathews travels to West Point to play its final regular season game. The Devils look to end the regular season 14-3 and begin post-season play the following week.
