MHS cross country teams win region titles; Stearns takes MVP

Both the Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams became Class 1, Region A champions last week, running to victory in Friday’s regional meet at Eastern State in Williamsburg.

The MHS girls performed incredibly well as a squad, finishing with 48 team points for the win, beating second-place West Point, which scored 59 points.

The boys’ race was not as close as the girls; Mathews won with 19 points, well ahead of Lancaster, who became the regional runners-up with 68 points.

The two MHS teams will be in the hunt for a state championship in the VHSL state tournament, which will be held on Friday at Great Meadow, The Plains.

In last week’s regional meet, the Blue Devils were joined by teams from Middlesex, Northumberland, Franklin, Essex, Northampton, Lancaster, West Point, Surry, and Washington and Lee. The girls’ race was held first in the early afternoon.
