MHS cross country teams win first meet of year

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams had their first meet of the year on Aug. 31, with both squads taking the win.

The meet was hosted by Mathews at Beaverdam Park, and Washington and Lee High School, King William High School, Essex High School, and Northumberland High School all joined the race.

The girls’ race commenced first, with Mathews performing well. Jaysen Hall came in first for the Blue Devils, and second overall, with a time of 23:45. She was closely followed by Brittany Ottarson (23:58) and Abbie Hudgins (24:12), who were third and fourth respectively. Next to finish for Mathews were Rileigh Betz (eighth, 24:45), Avery Betz (ninth, 24:50), Reilly Price (10th, 24:53) and Connie Johnson (11th, 25:05) who rounded out the team’s top runners.

Skylar Lewis (27:43) was next to finish on the team. She was closely followed by Kayla Stearns (28:15), Caroline Bray (28:15), Kamryn Blake (28:36) and Zoe Goodwin (29:17). Mathews finished...
