MHS cross country teams place third in state

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both placed third in Friday’s state meet at Great Meadow at The Plains. The Devils also had two runners qualify for All-State honors—Justin Adams for the boys and Rileigh Betz for the girls—for placing fifth and ninth, respectively.

The MHS boys entered Friday’s meet ranked sixth in the state, but they surprised a couple of teams, thanks to some blazing fast times by their top five runners. Adams ran his 5K in 16 minutes, 51 seconds. While this wasn’t a personal best, considering the difficulty of the course and the frigid temperatures, it was still an incredibly fast time.

Jalen Thomas and Caleb Carson held together for most of the race and finished close to each other at 18:00 and 18:06, respectively. Cody Kelly and Sam Jasinski managed to close the gap between them and the two Mathews runners ahead of them during the last half of the race, finishing in 18:10 and 18:16, respective...
