The Mathews High School cross country season ended on a high note, as the MHS girls placed fifth overall and the boys’ team placed fourth in Saturday’s VHSL Class 1 State Championship meet in Salem. Additionally, Cameron Stearns placed fourth overall individually in the boys’ race to earn All-State honors.
Many Blue Devils runners also set personal records for the season in Saturday’s competition. Abbie Hudgins led the Mathews girls with a time of 22:42, followed by Melody Smith (22:58), Avery Betz (23:05), Zoe Goodwin (23:21), Caroline Bray (24:13), Anna Raub (25:30) and Kamryn Blake (25:31).
In the boys’ race, Stearns turned in a time of 16:29. He was followed by Josh Rosadino (17:20), Isaiah Bivins (17:49), Braden Hunley (17:59), Dennis Wood (18:10), Dylan White (19:32) and Carson Brown (20:15).
