MHS cross country teams now 4-0

The Mathews High School boys and girls cross country teams improved to 4-0, following last Wednesday’s meet against Middlesex. The Mathews boys defeated the Chargers 20 to 43, while the girls won 24-37.

At the start of the race, it seemed as if it would be a close matchup between the Blue Devils and the Chargers, but Mathews came through at the end with a victory. Once again, Kyle Slaughter and Nancy Barnhardt led the Mathews runners.

Slaughter came in second overall at the meet with a time of 18:07. Shortly behind were Elisha Kane (18:52), Andrew Merz (19:20), Phillip Machen (19:22), Nick Brown (19:42), Sam Spadaccini (19:54) and Sam Jasinski (19:54), finishing out the varsity top seven.

"This is a very young team that is learning how to survive week to week and improve themselves," Slaughter said. "They are also learning the value of pack running, and the value of a team that stays together wins together."
