MHS cross country teams complete unbeaten seasons

The Mathews High School cross country program’s regular season came to a close on Oct. 16, as the Blue Devil boys and girls hosted runners from West Point, King and Queen and King William at Beaverdam Park in Gloucester.

Before the race began, MHS seniors were recognized: Jade Davis, five-year runner Blake Atkins, Sean Carlson, Calvin Kramer, and five-year runner and team captain Will Hutcheson.

In the girls’ race, Abbie Hudgins won in 23:07 ahead of a West Point runner who finished in 23:14.

Brittany Ottarson (23:28) was the next Blue Devil to finish, followed by Jade Davis (23:42), Zoe Goodwin (23:53) and Avery Betz (24:02). The Mathews team was rounded out by Caroline Bray (24:56) and Kamryn Blake (26:15).

Mathews won the race convincingly with a final team score of 22 points. West Point finished in second place with 36 points and King William finished off the team scoring in third with 81. King and Queen performed well, but did not have enough athletes to finish wit...
